Obtaining a Private Pilot License (PPL)

Per the requirements set forth by the Federal Aviation Administration, to obtain a private pilot license, the following is an idea of what’s required: A minimum of 40 hours in the airplane:

  • 20 hours dual instruction
  • 10 hours of solo flight
  • 5 hours of solo cross-country flight time
  • 10-night landings
  • 3 landings at a controlled airport
  • 3 hours of basic instrument flying
  • A written and medical exam
  • A check ride with a designated pilot examiner

John Travolta

Possibly one of the most famous of the celebrity pilots, John Travolta started flying at the age of 22. He now owns several planes including a former Qantas Boeing 707 and a Challenger 601. On his Florida property, he has a 7,500-foot runway. Travolta is also type-rated in 11 different aircraft.

Clint Eastwood

This celebrity has been a helicopter pilot for over 30 years. In the Army, before obtaining his PPL, Eastwood once survived a plane crash in the ocean and swam nearly 3-miles in shark-infested waters to safety. Eastwood still flies regularly, even in his late 80s.
