In an attempt to reduce the spread of the fatal coronavirus, The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) advised flight attendants to start wearing diapers in early December 2020. This would prevent them from having to use airplane lavatories, which facilitated the spread of the virus. As per information from Fox News and CNN, the recommendation was published in a document titled “Technical Guidelines for Epidemic Prevention and Control for Airlines” towards the end of November.
According to the CAAC, flight crew members and passengers put themselves at risk each time they come into contact with lavatory toilet seats, tray tables, and even sinks. It might not always be easy to tell who has already contracted COVID-19, especially if they interacted with an infected person recently. Refraining from using lavatories is among the most effective ways to protect oneself.
The CAAC argument was backed by Vietnamese research that was conducted in March 2020. The study examined the 15 COVID-19 cases recorded in Vietnam Airlines, with the victims being passengers and members of flight crews. It concluded that plane toilets might have led to the infection of 12 passengers and a flight attendant. This is something that could have been avoided through the use of diapers.
Even though the surfaces in lavatories could be playing a major role in the spread of COVID-19, the air in there is harmless. This is because fresh air is always being pumped into the toilets; hence air from an infected person never lingers.
The use of diapers for flight crew members might sound absurd, but it might be a great way to reduce the spread of coronavirus as the world waits for the administration of effective vaccines that have been manufactured so far. Japan Air Lines is also focusing on creating a touchless bathroom door that could help prevent more COVID-19 infections among flight crews.
